Common Cold Symptoms

We’ve all been there, you wake up in the morning, and you feel like you can’t take a step outside of your house, and despite being great yesterday and all you want to do is stay at home and sleep. Unfortunately for us, this happens every once in awhile, and it’s almost impossible to avoid the headaches, and several other symptoms that the common cold brings. The common cold is a virus, but it is not the same thing as the flu so make sure not to have these two mixed up.

No matter how hard we try, getting a cold is inevitable at some point. However, if that cold lingers, or you seem to be getting more than your fair share then it is worth looking at if there is anything within your diet that could be improved. A weakened immune system can be a symptom of a protein deficiency so if there is a chance that you are not getting enough protein in your diet then that is something to look at. Lamb is an excellent source of protein which could really help to give your immune system a boost, and has the added benefit of also being a great source of iron too. If you’re lacking in iron then you could end up feeling really run down and lethargic, really not what you need when you’re trying to recover.

Some of the most common symptoms of the cold are:

  • Congestion and a runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Sneezing and possibly coughing
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle ache
  • General weakness

Stages Of The Common Cold

The common cold usually comes in three stages:

1. Early Stage – Lasts from Day 1 to Day 3

Usually, we can all tell when we are coming down with a cold. The familiar feeling of tickling or soreness in your throat, overall exhaustion and aches in the body – we’ve all been there.

2. Active Stage – Lasts from Day 4 to Day 7

The active stage is by far the hardest and worst stage of the common cold. You might experience intense body aches, incessant coughing, difficulty staying active and awake, a runny nose and high body temperature. But don’t worry – these symptoms are  the way your body’s immune system fights the virus.

3. Late/Ending Stage – Lasts from Day 8 to Day 10

This stage is when you’ll gradually start feeling a bit better. Your cough should be of lesser intensity, you should start to feel more energetic, and your nose should not be runny anymore. The fatigue may persist for a couple more days as your body replenishes its energy after fighting against the virus, but other than that, you should be able to go back to your daily activities feeling fine.

Home Remedies For The Common Cold

Since the common cold is a virus it can’t be treated with antibiotics, however there are some simple home remedies to ease the symptoms and hasten it’s demise.

Warm Salt Water

Mix 1/4 tsp of salt and the same of baking soda into half a cup of warm water. Using a bulb syringe, squirt it into one nostril, holding nthe other closed. Let it drain and repeat several times, then do the same with the other nostril. This not only breaks down the congestion in your nose, but also helps to remove bacteria and viruses.
